The Visually Impaired
Computer Users' Group List
VICUG-L serves as a conduit through which members of
visually impaired/blind computer users' groups nation- and world-wide can
exchange educational materials, keep one another apprised of their activities,
and discuss strategies for co-ordinated action.
Originally VICUG-L was merely the discussion/announcement
list for VICUG
NYC, the Visually Impaired Computer Users' Group of the New York
Metropolitan Area. However, the benefits of a global list which
connects, and even fosters the establishment and growth of, local VICUGs caused the
listowners to broaden the list's mandate.
Since VICUG-L is a dialogue, rather than a discussion or
a chat list, potential subscribers are asked to review the following ground
rules carefully before subscribing.
- VICUG-L is an organizational and informational list,
which is intended to foster constructive dialogue and increase networking
amongst computer user groups. Flamers will be dropped from the list without
warning.
- SUBJECT LINES: Subject: lines should be brief and precise. Because
VICUG-L is a multi-purpose list, it is essential that the
Subject: line accurately reflect the contents of the message's body, if the
list is to function effectively. Please exercise care in this regard when
responding to messages.
- SUBJECT LINE PREFIXES: Messages specifically intended for the members
of a specific computer users' group should contain a Subject: line prefix
so as to provide listmembers with an effective filtering mechanism. A
list of the current prefixes will be mailed to you upon confirmation of
your subscription.
- The following Subject: lines should also be used to indicate the
content of posts:
ACT: activism updates; calls for action (i.e. emailing campaigns)
EDU: educational materials
PROP: proposals for co-ordinated action
TECH: emerging technologies and their implications
WEB: world wide web related posts/pointers to online information
- MAIL FILTERING: The use of Subject: line prefixes not only provides
listmembers with an effective means of manually filtering the mail that is
distributed by VICUG-L, but is designed to enhance the
performance of automated mail filters. To learn more about the use of
automatic mail filters with a shell account, please consult the
Filtering Mail FAQ. A plain ASCII copy of
the Filtering Mail FAQ can be obtained from:
<ftp://rtfm.mit.edu/pub/usenet/news.answers/mail/filtering-faq>
A hypertext version of the
Filtering Mail FAQ is located at:
<http://www.ii.com/internet/robots/procmail/qs/>
If you are using a GUI
mail program, such as Eudora, please consult its online help files for
instructions on how to use its built-in filtering features.
- QUOTING: Please avoid overquoting previous posts--often, a brief
summation of a previous post or the thread to which you are contributing
is sufficient. Those who object to another listmember's overquoting should
send their complaints directly to the poster, and
Cc them to the listowners, using the
following eddress:
<VICUG-L-request@listserv.icors.org>
- NETIQUITTE: Complaints about and criticism of other listmembers
and/or the organizations to which they belong should be handled
off-list via private email.
- MEETING MINUTES: Conference announcements and minutes of meetings
should be sent to the listowner for general distribution and NOT
to the list itself. Meeting minutes are subject to non-intrusive editing,
such as the pruning of long headers. The posting of brief announcements
which indicate the URL
of a meeting's minutes directly to the list is, however, perfectly acceptable.
