The Sunday before Thanksgiving

just like always

Advance registration is required .

Since the canal is wide and has gentle turns, a somewhat more interesting start will be used than in most other races. As many as 8 canoes will be started at once. The slowest boats first. Another group will be started as soon as possible. This will provide the shortest delay at the start and finish as well as a more competitive atmosphere. In contrast to the "lonely" or "are we still in the race" feeling, we hope to have a more "social" race. There are no overhanging trees, no sandbars and no "log jumps". There are 3 short portages around the locks at mile 49, 51.5 and 53. They are about 100 yds each on the old tow path with gravel footing.

As shown on the printable map, there are several locations along the course where easy access will provide excellent viewing by spectators, so be sure to bring along your cheering section. You can also have your crew waiting at each check point.
The record time is 1 hour 25 minutes, however times usually average about 2 hours ( see last year's results ).

Each participant will receive a limited edition, collector's quality mug. Subsequent D&RC races will distribute additional mugs each of the same color and style with unique race dates.

At the start coffee, tea, and orange juice may be provided by the Black Wells Mills Canel House people. Please give them a donation.

Mulled cider will be served at the finish and hot chilli will be available for purchase.
There are bathrooms (YES!) available at both the start and finish. Bring dry clothes to change into after the race.

The race will start at the canal house in Blackwell's Mills, south of Millstone . Please drive there and drop off your boat.
Then drive to the finish at the Van Wickle house (15 minutes). You can leave your car there and car pool back to the start. The first group will begin the race at 10:00.

Be sure to arrive before 8:30 so as to allow time to shuttle cars around.

All contestants must wear coast guard approved P.F.D.'s at all times. It is the responsibility of every contestant to stop racing and assist any other boat in trouble.
