This describes the setup of Microsoft Exchange for Windows95.

Prerequisites

  1. Windows95 Internet Explorer 2.1 or 3.0 is installed and working.

Configuration Process

This single document is setup so you click on the links as you follow the setup on your PC.
  1. Basic Configuration: Go to "My Computer", "Control Panel"

Basic Configuration - Control Panel Settings

From the Control Panel,

Add/Remove Programs

From the "Windows Setup" tab

Network icon

  1. The "Configuration" tab needs to show

    Under "The following network components are installed:" you need to see:

    • Dial-up Adapter
    • TCP/IP
    • (Optional)Client for Microsoft Network
  2. The primary network logon must say "Windows Logon"
  3. If you see "Client for Microsoft Network" under "The following network components are installed:", skip this step. Otherwise, install "Client for Microsoft Network".
  4. Click on the "Identification" Tab.

    Set your computer name to your user-id

    You can leave the Workgroup name alone.

  5. Under the "Access Control" tab. No changes are needed.
  6. Click on the "Configuration" tab

    Highlight "Client for Microsoft Networks", click PROPERTIES. Unless you are on a LAN (in which case talk to your LAN administrator), ONLY the "quick logon" button should be clicked.

  7. Reboot
  8. After Windows95 restarts, it will ask you for a password to logon to the network. DO NOT specify a password. (Most folks, anyway) The exception is when you'r on a LAN - talk to your LAN admin.
  9. Click OK (return you to the Control Panel)

Install Client for Microsoft Network
From the "Configuration" tab,
  1. Click on "ADD"
  2. Click on "Client", click on ADD
  3. Click on "Microsoft" in the left screen, then "Client for Microsoft Network" in the right screen
  4. d. Click OK
  5. Click OK (return you to the Network Configuration tabs)

Configure the Mail Client

This configuration only handles a single mailbox per login. It is based on Microsoft Exchange Version 4.

You should be in "My computer", "Control Panel", "Mail and FAX"

  1. In the "Internet Mail Settings Properties" window, under the "Services" tab, you must see
    • "Internet Mail"
    • "Personal Address Book"
    • "Personal Folders".

    If you do not see these 3 items, Cick on ADD, highlight the missing item, then click OK. Repeat this until you have all three items loaded.

    If you see "Microsoft Mail", highlight it, then click on REMOVE. (Most folks anyway, unless you'r on a LAN).

  2. Configure Internet Mail: High-light "Internet Mail" then click PROPERTIES.
  3. Click OK (return you to the Control Panel)

Internet Mail Properties

  1. On the "General" tab,

    Note: The id and password refer to your HICom PPP login ID and password.

    Note: Upper and Lower case characters matter!

    • a. For Full name, type your name as you normally type it. Here, use Upper and Lower case characters as you normally would.
    • b. For E-mail address, type: your-id@hicom.net (If you have your own domain name, type your-id@your-domain.com) This is your "Reply-To" address.
    • c. Internet Mail Server should be: mail.hicom.net
    • d. Account Name should be: your-id
    • e. Password should be: your-password
  2. Click on the "Connection" tab:

Boot-Up Mail Check

If you want to automatically check for mail when you turn on your PC (in the morning):
  1. Go to Windows Explorer (Start, Program, Windows Explorer)
  2. In the left window,

    a. Find the Windows Directory, expand it (Double Click the folder)

    b. Find the Start Menu, expand it

    c. Find the Programs directory, expand it

    d. Find the Start Up directory, expand it.

  3. While pressing the control key, click-on and drag-and-drop the Inbox Icon from the desktop to the right window.
  4. Return to start of instructions

How to Check for Mail

  1. If you configured "Boot-Up Check", when you boot up your PC it will automatically check for new mail.
  2. To just check mail, double-click on the InBox icon.
  3. If you are logged on via Internet Explorer, double-click on the InBox icon (You need to use get to it from the Start button).
  4. Return to start of instructions
