Subj: VICUG-NYC Mass Transit Strike Info page at VICUG NYC web site
aloha!
while i don't have to tell any of you that there's a mass
transit strike in new york city, i do need to alert you
to the fact that there is a mass transit strike emergency
information page at the VICUG NYC web site - specifically,
at:
http://www.hicom.net/~oedipus/vicug/mta_strike_info.html
which contains links to official new york city government
information, official metropolitan transit authority (MTA)
information, and (in the interest of equal time slash fair
play) the official web site of the transit workers union
local 100
the page will be updated as new information becomes
available and/or situatios warrant, but don't forget that
you can always dial 311 if you just can't wait for the
next update of VICUG NYC's Mass Transit Strike
Information page.
as for users of NYC's paratransit service, Access-A-Ride,
here is what the MTA has to say about its continued
functioning as of December 20, 2005:
-- begin quote
Access-A-Ride paratransit service will operate.
* Trips will be scheduled during the strike, but area
roads are expected to be heavily congested and travel
times will be longer than usual.
* Access-A-Ride customers should limit their travel to
essential trips and be patient during any mass transit
disruptions.
-- end quote
[quote source: http://www.mta.info/strike/nyct.htm]
and, remember, for less than the price of a subway ride, you
can always ride the PATH trains - at least from Thirty-Third
Street slash Penn Station to Christopher Street (unless, of
course, you want to cross over to the joisey side of the
hudson or are trying to get to the PATH station at the former
World Trade Center site, for which you have to first cross,
and then re-cross the hudson) - for those of you unfamiliar
with PATH trains, here are the PATH stops in Manhattan:
* Thirty-Third Street: bottom level of the subway station at
corner of 33rd & Sixth Avenue
* Twenty-Third Street: bottom level of the subway station at
corner of 23rd & Sixth Avenue
* Fourteenth Street: bottom level of the subway station at
corner of 14th & Sixth Avenue
* Ninth Street: bottom level of the subway station at corner
of 9th & Sixth Avenue
* Christopher Street: PATH-specific entrance nearby subway
station at corner of Christopher & Hudson Streets
you can also obtain PATH information via phone: 1 800 234 7284
good luck getting where you're going!
gregory.
